UID INITIATIVE

This standard provides the item marking criteria for development of specific marking requirements and methods for identification of items of military property produced, stocked, stored, and issued by or for the Department of Defense. This standard addresses criteria and data content for both free text and machine-readable information (MRI) applications of item identification marking.  MIL-STD-130M

This version 1.6 of the Guide to Uniquely Identifying Items distinguishes between the terms “DoD Item Unique Identification (IUID)” and “Unique Item Identifier (UII)”. IUID is a system of marking items delivered to the Department of Defense with unique item identifiers that have machine-readable data elements to distinguish an item from all other like and unlike items.  DoD Guide to Uniquely Identifying Items V1.6

The UII identifies an item with a set of data elements that are unambiguous and globally unique. The UII is encoded into a Data Matrix symbol with a software package. The Data Matrix with the encoded UII is placed on the item by a label or directly marked on the item. An imager can then be used to retrieve the UII data elements from the item, which can then be assembled into a concatenated UII and transmitted to a database. Data about the item can then be associated with the concatenated UII.  Tips on Constructing UII Marking Data
